Privacy Policy
This is a straightforward account of what we collect, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do with it. Cover Story is operated by Retail Opportunity LLC. Questions can be directed to privacy@getacoverstory.com.
What we collect
When you place an order or join a waitlist, we collect what’s necessary to fulfill that purpose. Nothing more.
- Contact information. Your email address, collected when you join the waitlist or preorder. We use it to confirm your order, notify you when your book is being wrapped, and write when a new edition is available.
- Shipping address. Collected at checkout to deliver your order.
- Payment information. Processed entirely through Shopify Payments. We do not store card numbers, expiration dates, or CVVs. Payment data goes directly to Shopify and their payment processors. Their privacy policy is available at shopify.com/legal/privacy.
- Usage data. We use standard analytics tools, including Google Analytics and the Meta pixel, to understand how people find us and which pages they read. This includes IP addresses, browser type, pages visited, and referral sources. These tools use cookies.
How we use it
We use your information for three purposes.
- Fulfillment. Processing and shipping your order, sending order confirmations and updates, and handling returns or exchanges.
- Communication. Writing to you when a new edition prints, a title ships, or something relevant to your order changes. If you joined the waitlist, we’ll write when it’s back. We don’t send newsletters for the sake of sending them.
- Improvement. Understanding which pages are read, where visitors come from, and how the store performs. This data is aggregated and used to make better decisions about the product and the site.
We do not sell your information. We do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
Cookies
Our store uses cookies to operate. Some are strictly necessary (session management, checkout state). Others are used for analytics and advertising measurement.
You can disable non-essential cookies through your browser settings. Doing so won’t prevent you from placing an order, though some features may behave differently. Our analytics tools (Google Analytics, Meta pixel) set cookies that track behavior across sessions and, in some cases, across sites.
How long we keep it
Order information is retained for as long as necessary to fulfill the transaction and comply with applicable tax and accounting requirements, typically seven years. Waitlist emails are retained until the relevant edition is fulfilled or you ask us to remove them. Analytics data is retained per the default settings of Google Analytics (26 months) and Meta.
Third parties
Running an e-commerce store requires a small number of service providers. Each receives only what they need to do their job.
- Shopify. Our storefront and order management platform. Handles checkout, payment processing, and order fulfillment infrastructure.
- Google Analytics. Site analytics. Aggregated behavior data. Subject to Google’s privacy policy.
- Meta. Advertising measurement via the Meta pixel. Subject to Meta’s data policy.
- Shipping carriers. Your name and shipping address are shared with the carrier responsible for your delivery (e.g., USPS, UPS, FedEx).
We don’t use data brokers, rent lists, or share information with advertisers for targeting purposes.
California residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have specific rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act.
- Right to know. You can request a copy of the personal information we’ve collected about you in the past 12 months, including the categories of data, the sources, and the purposes for which it was collected.
- Right to delete. You can request that we delete your personal information, subject to certain exceptions (such as information needed to complete a transaction or comply with a legal obligation).
- Right to opt out of sale. We don’t sell personal information. There is nothing to opt out of.
- Right to non-discrimination. Exercising any of these rights will not affect the price or availability of our products.
To exercise your rights, write to us at privacy@getacoverstory.com. We’ll respond within 45 days.
Children
Our store is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with their information, write to us and we’ll remove it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we’ll update the date below and, if the change is material, write to customers who have placed orders. The current version is always at this address.
